 A “knee jerk reaction” or a “knee jerk response”, is a very quick response where no time was given to actually think about it and consider the situation.

For example, in business, imagine a situation where sales are not going well at all.  The managers knee jerk reaction might be to sack all the sales staff.

What the reality could be is the product was no longer suitable for the market and they needed to change.

So if he had considered that and not taken a knee jerk reaction, he might keep the good sales staff that he has and maybe change the product or adapt to the market in some way.
