Today’s idiom is “only so many” or “only so much”.

Now, remember we use “many” when we’re talking about things that are countable. Like “there are many people living in the city.”

And we will use “much” when it’s not countable. Like “we had so much rain”, meaning we had a lot of rain.

But if we put the word “only” in front of it… “Only so many” or “only so much”, means there was a limit to it.

So for example, a train, ” there are only so many people that will fit on a train”. It has a limited capacity.

For “much” … “There’s only so much that I can eat because my stomach has a limited capacity”.
